How do you become GGD-recognised for permanent make-up

To place permanent make-up legally in the Netherlands you must undergo a GGD inspection. This inspection checks hygiene and safety measures for you and your workspace.

How do you become GGD-recognised for permanent make-up

Why do you have to be GGD-approved if you want to place permanent make-up?

In the Netherlands, the GGD (Dutch Municipal Health Service) is responsible for all hygiene and safety measures. They have determined for the whole of the Netherlands what is and is not allowed during and before placing permanent make-up. That is why you personally, and your space, have to pass an inspection before you may officially place permanent make-up. Without a permit you absolutely may not tattoo someone's face. You can expect an inspection from the GGD every so often, and you then have to meet all the requirements.

Do you not have a GGD inspection carried out, but still place permanent make-up? Then you risk creating an enormous problem for yourself. Should you ever disfigure someone, or should something ever go wrong during a treatment, then you are personally liable. This can run into thousands of euros and perhaps you did not know this yet, but you can be prosecuted under criminal law for injury to a client without having undergone a GGD inspection.

Which products do you need for GGD recognition for permanent make-up?

It is important to use exactly the right products during your GGD inspection. If you use the wrong products, there is a chance that the GGD leaves and makes a new appointment with you. In addition to the €324.67, this ultimately costs you another €108.22 per hour extra during the next appointment. And you can count on the GGD spending some 60 to 120 minutes in your salon.

To make everything simpler for you we have created an online training course. Here you get to see exactly which products you need and why. We also explain to you in great detail why the GGD is not a fan of certain products, and what you can change so you can be sure you pass the inspection.

After you have fully completed our training course, you receive a PDF with a product list, information about where you can easily purchase all the products, extra tips & tricks and an official certificate from IZZI Brows.

What does a GGD inspection cost for placing permanent make-up?

The GGD has placed a standard form on their website with the rates for being inspected. There you can look up what applies to you.

Piercing holes in ears and nostrils with a piercing instrument: €270.56. Cosmetic tattoo, permanent make-up, tattooing or piercing with disposable materials: €432.89. Follow-up cosmetic tattoo or permanent make-up: €324.67. Tattooing including autoclaving: €487. Piercing where materials are sterilised: €487. Combination of the above activities: €595.22. Re-inspection based on the hourly rate: €108.22 per hour. Exemption from permit requirement based on reduced rate: €162.34.

These are only the prices to have the space and you personally inspected — in other words, how you work on a client. This inspection must be renewed every 3 years, or every time you change location. So should you move in the meantime, you are obliged to undergo a new inspection. The products and items you need are therefore not yet included.

To get a permit to tattoo or pierce, the GGD comes by to carry out an inspection. Have you completed a course and can you now tattoo or pigment, as with permanent make-up? Then you can register your space as the location where you ultimately want to pigment as a business. This does involve a lot of requirements, and these are often underestimated by course providers.
