PMU Lip Aftercare
The right aftercare following lip pigmentation ensures a beautiful, even end result.
Good aftercare following a PMU lip treatment is essential for a long-lasting and beautiful result.
PMU Lip Aftercare: Instructions for an Optimal Result
You can compare new permanent make-up to a graze. The right aftercare of your PMU lips is crucial to let the healing process run well and to achieve a beautiful end result. After a semi-permanent make-up treatment, your lips are vulnerable and more sensitive.
By following the aftercare instructions precisely, you prevent infections and pigment loss and ensure that your lips look beautiful for a long time.
Permanent Lip Aftercare Day 1 to 9
To ensure that your lips heal optimally and retain their pigment, follow these aftercare instructions during the first nine days:
Use the ointment you received from your practitioner. Apply it carefully with a clean cotton swab to keep your lips hydrated. Avoid petroleum jelly or other products that are not recommended.
- Gently wash your lips twice a day during the first days with lukewarm water and unscented soap and pat them dry with a clean towel.
- Use a straw to drink during the first days, so drinks do not irritate the treated skin.
- PMU lips are an open wound and susceptible to infections. Do not touch the treated skin with your hands.
- If you apply an aftercare cream, do so with a clean cotton swab.
- Do not sleep on your face; this prevents scabs from falling off too soon. Also use a clean pillowcase to prevent infections.
- Let scabs come off on their own. Do not scratch or pull them off; this can cause pigment loss and scars.
- Do not use lipstick, lip gloss or other lip products until the lips are fully healed and all scabs have fallen off.
- Avoid aggressive products with ingredients such as retinol, glycolic acid or salicylic acid.
- Do not expose your lips to direct sunlight, tanning beds, saunas or steam baths for at least four weeks.
- Do not exercise for 5 days. Your sweat contains salts that can reject the pigment.
- After healing, you can use a lip balm with SPF to protect the pigmentation.
- Do not eat spicy, sour or extremely hot food that can irritate the sensitive skin.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the first hours after the treatment.
Aftercare after the first healing
After 1 week, the scabs are usually fully healed, but this can still take about 9 days. After the first healing phase, you can take extra steps to maintain the results of your PMU lips:
- Use sun protection: Protect your lips with a balm that contains SPF 30 or higher to prevent fading from UV radiation.
- Schedule a touch-up: Schedule a follow-up treatment 6–8 weeks after the first session to perfect the colour and shape of your lips.
- Consider annual maintenance treatments: An annual touch-up is recommended to keep your lips beautiful for a long time.
Healing Time for PMU Lips
- The first healing takes 5–7 days, during which the scabs come off on their own.
- During the second week, the colour may temporarily look faded, but it returns after 3–4 weeks.
- The full healing, including colour stabilisation, takes 6–8 weeks.
Frequently asked questions
What happens after a PMU Lip Treatment?
After a PMU lip treatment, you can expect the following reactions: Slight swelling and/or redness: Your lips may be somewhat sensitive, swollen and red immediately after the treatment. This is normal and will decrease within 24 to 48 hours. Intense colour: The colour of your lips will look darker than desired in the first few days. During the healing process, the colour becomes softer and more natural. Scabs: Small scabs may form as your lips heal. It is important not to touch or remove these, as this can cause pigment loss or scars.
1. How long does the healing of PMU lips take?
The superficial healing process takes 7–10 days, but the full healing and colour stabilisation can take up to 8 weeks.
2. Can I drink after my PMU lip treatment?
Yes. Preferably use a straw during the first days, so drinks do not irritate the treated skin. Otherwise keep your lips clean by gently washing them twice a day with lukewarm water and unscented soap.
3. What should I do if scabs form on my lips?
Let the scabs come off on their own. Do not scratch or pull them off; this can disrupt the pigmentation, which of course you do not want.
4. When can I use lipstick again?
Wait at least 10 days, or until your lips are fully healed and all scabs have fallen off, before applying make-up to the lips.
