PMU – Freckles — Frequently asked questions

Sunkissed freckles are the softest freckles there are. Real sunkissed freckles literally appear in summer from the sun. The ones we place are indistinguishable from real ones once they've healed.

We have a very broad range of pigments. We test a number of pigment colours on your own skin so we can choose the best undertone for the freckles. Naturally, we determine the right colour with our advice and your opinion.

Freckles generally heal the fastest of all PMU treatments. You need about 4–6 days at most to judge the colour well. On day 1 after the treatment day the freckles may be darker in colour. On days 2 and 3 this dark colour is almost gone. On days 4–6 the freckles may lighten in colour — a natural reaction of the skin. After day 6 the correct colour returns and the true freckle colour is clearly visible.

Not much can go wrong with the treatment itself. We are the only ones in the whole of the Netherlands who are highly specialised in this treatment, and everyone currently placing freckles in the Netherlands was trained by us. The only thing that can 'go wrong' is not making the right decision yourself. That means: too much doubt? Then first try applying make-up freckles for a while to see whether you can get used to them, or try a faux-freckles filter on Instagram to see how it looks. We always advise: rather too few and too soft than too many and too dark. Once you're used to them, you can always choose to intensify the existing ones with pigment or add more freckles.

We always test the pigment we work with on your skin first. A beauty spot is always more intense in colour and a bit larger than a normal freckle. After testing the pigments we can form a proper picture of which pigment best suits your skin.

A beauty spot treatment does not include a standard touch-up treatment because the beauty spots are already placed with darker pigment. This means you lose less pigment during healing, simply because the colour is already darker.

Freckles do include a touch-up, but we don't treat as standard. This is because once the freckles have healed correctly and as desired, we don't place pigment on them again. The chance of the freckles then ending up much darker is greater, because after the second treatment you only lose about 20% of the pigment after the healing process.

Up to 2 weeks after the treatment you can let us know if something isn't right or needs adjusting. This is mainly done when the freckles don't take well (after the touch-up treatment) or when too much pigment has disappeared after all.

The healing process is explained clearly right after the treatment, and you also receive a form about this process by email. What matters most is realising that you have and must care for 'open wounds' where the freckles are. Of course they're very small and don't really feel like open wounds, but they must be treated as such. Both the top (visible) layer of the freckles and the inner side of the skin layer need the rest and space to heal properly. This mainly means: follow the aftercare well, wear no make-up on the freckles for 7 days, no sun, swimming pool or sauna — and above all no peels / micro-needling at all.

We mainly do not work with red undertones in the pigment when placing freckles, because that can cause red to be the only colour left at the end of fading. That is because red is the largest molecule of all the colours in pigments. Because we don't work with it and only use soft undertones that suit your skin, you'll truly end up with ever-fainter freckles and no odd pigment colours left individually in the skin.

We do everything in consultation; we only treat once there's agreement. We cleanse the skin before drawing the freckles in the right place with a pencil. Then we determine the pigment together with you. Only once all freckles are drawn in the right place and the right pigment has been chosen and discussed do we start the treatment.

The freckles are placed in the first skin layer of the face; this treatment is in no way experienced as painful. We also work as standard with a soothing cream that keeps the skin from becoming irritated during the treatment, so the treatment itself is not felt.

This is always possible. It must, however, be indicated well before the treatment appointment. During the first treatment the number of freckles is determined; if next time, during the touch-up, you want more than 5 extra freckles, additional costs will be charged.
