Permanent make-up if you are pregnant

Permanent make-up is a popular cosmetic treatment in which pigment is introduced into the skin to create a long-lasting result. Many women wonder whether they can have permanent make-up applied during pregnancy. In this blog we will answer this question and explain why it is generally advised against having permanent make-up applied during pregnancy.

Permanent make-up is a form of tattooing in which pigments are introduced into the skin to create a long-lasting cosmetic result. It is often applied to the eyebrows, lips and eyes to create a natural-looking effect.

Is permanent make-up during pregnancy safe?

In general, it is advised against having permanent make-up applied during pregnancy. This is because not enough research has yet been done into the safety of the pigments that enter the skin during pregnancy. There are also some concerns that the pigments may be absorbed through the skin and reach the foetus. Although there is no evidence that permanent make-up is harmful to the foetus, undergoing the treatment during pregnancy is advised against as a precaution.

When you have permanent make-up applied during your pregnancy, the pigments end up in your bloodstream. Because it enters the bloodstream, it will also reach the foetus. There is still insufficient research into what the pigment can do to a foetus and whether it is harmful. As a precaution, we absolutely do not apply permanent make-up to our clients during pregnancy.

In addition, the skin of pregnant women is more sensitive and the healing process of the permanent make-up treatment can proceed differently. The colour of the permanent make-up may also change during pregnancy due to hormonal changes in the body. Hormones also break down the pigment more strongly, so it fades faster than when someone is not pregnant.

When can permanent make-up be applied?

Being pregnant is of course the most wonderful thing that can happen to you. You are busy planning things for the baby and enjoying this time. Having permanent make-up applied often doesn’t cross your mind then, but suddenly it comes up and you wonder: can I have permanent make-up applied during pregnancy? We are happy to explain everything.

Permanent make-up can be applied after pregnancy, once the body has fully recovered from giving birth. It is recommended to wait until the baby is at least six months old, because by then the body is back in balance and hormones are back at their normal levels. In addition, the skin may still be sensitive after giving birth, so it is important to follow the healing process closely and follow the aftercare instructions of the trained professional.

Besides preferably not having permanent make-up applied during pregnancy, it is also wise not to do so while breastfeeding. Here too, too little research has been done. However, once again the pigments are also passed on to the child through the milk. We therefore do not think it is wise to have permanent make-up done during pregnancy or immediately afterwards.

Conclusion

In short, having permanent make-up applied during pregnancy is advised against because of the unknown risks and the fact that the skin of pregnant women is more sensitive. It is recommended to wait until the baby is at least six months old and the body has fully recovered from giving birth before permanent make-up is applied. It is also important to follow the aftercare instructions of the trained professional to ensure that the permanent make-up takes well and looks beautiful for as long as possible.
